Complete your Sibelius*, Maazel*, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra* collection. The Sibelius expert Robert Layton, in his introduction to the programme, presents the Second Symphony as ‘the symphony by which many music lovers find their way to Sibelius’, and in his discussion of the Fifth he quotes the composer himself, in a comment about symphonic form: ‘a river with innumerable tributaries feeding it before it broadens majestically and flows into the sea’. Sibelius was nonetheless particularly irritated by comments made by Robert Kajanus, Finland’s most well-known conductor, who interpreted the Second Symphony as a musical depiction of the resistance and the triumph of the Finnish people in an article for the Hufvudstadsbladet newspaper a week after the work’s premiere; this opinion was consequently adopted by many. Sibelius’s second symphony, written in 1902, is arguably his best. Certainly, it stands up well more than a century later. The symphony is very much a nineteenth century work, with harmony and melody throughout, and a nice interplay between the string and horn sections. 2015-01-13 · Symphony No. 2 Neeme Järvi has always had a dynamic and dramatic approach to Sibelius and he has recorded the complete cycle twice, both with the Gothenburg Symphony in Sweden.

The genesis of the Second Symphony can be traced to Sibelius' trip to Italy in early 1901. The trip came about at the suggestion of his friend, the amateur musician Axel Carpelan, and it was there that he began contemplating several ambitious projects, including a four-movement tone poem based on the Don Juan story and a setting of Dante's Divina Commedia. From the pulsing, flowing waters at the beginning of the first movement to the heroic themes of the finale, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 takes us on an immense journey. But there’s something about the final movement, with its sweeping melody and rich orchestration that invariably raises the goosebumps on our arms. The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43, by Jean Sibelius was started in winter 1901 in Rapallo, Italy, shortly after the successful premiere of the popular Finlandia, and finished in 1902 in Finland.
